If you’re a designer determined to become the hero of graphic design – the one that can do it all and impress your co-workers with your exceptional knowledge – that’s awesome! We admire you for that, so here are some tips to improve your graphic design skills:

1. Have a Web Dev. Buddy

Some companies look for designers who know a thing or two about coding. Having a design buddy that rocks at web development is a great way to learn more. Working on projects together can help both of you learn new things as you go. There’s always great tutorials online, but learning from a friend to get some hands on experience is way more fun.

2. Sign Up for a class

If there’s something specific you want to learn to help improve your graphic design skills, many local colleges offer night courses so you can continue to learn while working full-time. Take advantage of the classroom experience by meeting new people and being able to ask your instructor specific questions.

Also check out sites like Lynda.com or Codeschool.com, where you can dabble in some lessons in the comfort of your own home.

3. Start a design critique session

Meet up with some other designers that you trust and start a critique session. Share work with one another, ask for valuable feedback, and receive constructive criticism. This will help you step outside of your design bubble and evaluate your graphic design skills more closely.

4. Freelance

Take on a few freelance gigs to gain more experience. Freelance can strengthen your skills in communicating with clients, problem solving, prioritizing, and time management. Learning to manage your own projects can boost your confidence, and who doesn’t love some extra cash in the bank? Just remember – don’t allow freelance projects to interfere with your full-time position.

5. Follow graphic design blogs

To keep up with the ever-changing world of design, following some of your favorite design blogs will open up inspiration and give you an idea of what’s trending. There’s a ton of awesome design blogs that include great articles, tutorials, latest news, and tips for all types of designers. You’ll also have a good sense of what other designers are up to. Get involved with the design community by commenting on blogs and getting in touch with some of your favorite design bloggers.
